Wonderland group show @ The Light, Liverpool Street

Yesterday I was in London for the opening of the Wonderland Collective group show at The Light in Shoreditch. I painted this huge 8ft by 4ft wooden board with marker pens in just over 5 hours. There is some great work up inside the venue which is going to be staying up on display until 25th April, well worth a look in.

Arts Projekt is an amazing new project by the great ex pro skater and established artist Andy Howell.

The platform is a place for the most sought after brands and artists to collaborate and produce original works plus open and limited edition prints and products. Arts Projekt organises exhibitions and already includes some huge names including Obey, Dalek, Andy Howell, Bunny Kitty, Jim Phillips and Steve Caballero.

I'm chuffed to be the first UK based artist invited onto the platform :D

Street Art Awards 2008

60 artists who represent the cream of the current street art scene were asked to submit a piece of artwork on vinyl for the first ever independent street art awards event. The artwork is going to be displayed at Rough Trade East in London this Thursday at the awards ceremony, where it will be raffled off with all proceeds being donated to the Single Homeless Charity.

Here is my contribution, painted on an old 'the mamas and the papas' vinyl I found in a charity shop.

The show has been featured in a lot of the national press, including todays Sunday Observer...

Visual Tourettes X Let Them Create Gallery, 08/11/08

This weekend we ventured to Stoke on Trent to host a Visual Tourettes event for the launch of 'Let Them Create Gallery'. The artists selected were myself, Famous When Dead, DBO, Rocket01, Faunagraphic, SU1 and Two Pence. The theme for the collaboration was 'Fantastic, Found and Fake'. The piece will be staying up in the centre of Stoke On Trent for a month or so.

The gallery opens next Friday with an exhibition called 'Walking The Line', which features work from all the artists who produced the piece above, as well as work from D*Face, Eelus and more.

London Edge Tradeshow

Go and grab a copy from all good newsagents, HMV, Borders etc...

If you're a broke street artist from suburban Basingstoke it's not like you can just sell the whole side of that commuter train carriage you painted, or uproot that brick wall and flog it on eBay. And it's not like, being in Basingstoke, there's a massive audience for it anyway.

So you watch your work disappear piece by piece under several coats of district council beige and you try to figure out how you're ever going to crack the urban art scene when the big boys from the inner-cities are stealing the limelight with their stenciled suicide bombers and Guardian readership political messages. What to do? Well, you embrace your humble origins and say 'fuck it, I'll bring my art from the street and put it in their faces and they will love it and they will know my name is Kev Munday!" And then Kmag interviews you about it...

I was interested to read you describe your work as 'sub-urban'. Seems to me like there is as much, if not more, suburban street art than there is inner city street art, but it's not given the same credibility because it doesn't seem as subversive. Do you feel like your work gives a voice to less-recognised artists who've come from the same background as you?

For sure, there are plenty of people painting outside of the cities and scenes going off all over the place, it's much more real. So many Nathan Barley type 'street artists' spray a half-witted pseudo-political stencil on a wall for their fellow hipsters to gawp over and throw fistfuls of cash as and that's fine but it doesn't do it for me. Basingstoke and the surrounding suburbs have an awesome street art scene. I've put on a few Visual Tourettes shows there and we've literally had over 30+ different people putting their work up on the walls.

You mentioned Visual Tourettes, presumably you're not referring to some kind of socially awkward neuro-psycological affliction?

Visual Tourettes is 'an open mic night for the art world'. Basically what that means is we take over venues and the walls of the place are open to anyone who wants to put their work up. We have a collective of artists who paint live at the events in rotation and get locals involved too. We've organised shows in cities around the UK and recently, Stockholm.

Do you find that taking what has historically been a covert and secretive art form and bringing it to a live audience changes the message of the work, in that you have more immediate conversation with them whilst they watch it being created?

I guess that it does change the message of the work to some extent, mainly because the artists have a lot longer to create their work than they would on the streets. It's always surprising how many different types of people turn up to watch the live painting, it attracts such a varied audience.

You've made a pretty successful transition from anonymous street artist to successful commercial artist. Was it difficult to cross over? Are certain types of street art better suited to the commercial market than others?

It's so liberating to put work out on the streets, you're not asking for anyones opinion. It's about never asking for permission. When I was starting out people were telling me I was doing it wrong; "That's not graffiti, it's art!" now people look at my work and say "That's not art, it's graffiti!". At the end of the day I paint whatever I feel like and I think that is what people are after; something different.

It's not just canvas accommodating your artwork these days, you have a clothing label too, right?

Clothing is another way of getting my art out into the world and displayed on a more accessible medium. I get such a kick out of seeing people wearing things I've designed. I started UnderTheHat just over 4 years ago with 2 designs printed on 10 t-shirts; they sold out within 3 days. I put the money back into getting more tees and that's how it's gone ever since. The company motto is 'Making it up as we go along', because that is literally what I've done. It's stocked in over a dozen stores in the UK and across Europe now too.

I gather you've won yourself a few supermodels and rockstars as fans. What's the most rock and roll story you have?

How about sleeping rough behind venues whilst touring the UK with Visual Tourettes?

I've got several solo exhibitions coming up, starting with the Carhartt Store in London later in the year. I'm working on some vinyl toys which are set to be released in 2009, a coffee table book, new designs for UnderTheHat,touring with Visual Tourettes and a self published comic/zine. On top of this I'm constantly creating and painting both personal and commissioned work.

An Urban Kingdom is a distribution company taking upscale streetwear and directional tailoring from the United Kingdom and supplying it to stores across Scandinavia. Labels on the roster include UnderTheHat, Applied, Wonder and Mic(ism).

To launch our spring/summer ranges, they're putting on an exhibition of original artwork from the designers involved at the Almanna galleriet in Stockholm on the 27th February.

I've been busy creating work for this show over the last few months and can't wait to see it all up together alongside the other designers pieces!

Started in 2006, Visual Tourettes is unique for it's open exhibition platform and DIY attitude, letting everyone expose themselves and even sell their work with a 0% commission.

The nights are all free entry and have sets from different DJ's every month, as well as live painting from different artists at each event.

Confirmed to exhibit so far for Janaury include me, The 5683, Dirty Thirty, Two Pence, SU1, Lenzie, Unkle Al, K.Mckay, D-Tron, Danny Abuse, Goose Thorpe, DBO, Carl Sewell Designs, Rush Art and more...

Myself and Dirty Thirty were asked to go and paint the studios of Nuts Magazine's tv channel earlier this week! We had 3 hours to paint a massive space and it went out live on Nuts TV (available on freeview) with a few interviews with the 2 of us. We're getting a dvd of it so I'll try to get some footage up here soon for those who didn't see it!

At the beginning of August 2007 myself and the artist DBO are going to be touring around England producing our artwork onto bigggg canvases at various live music events. Here's the dates we have confirmed so far...

1st August- with Furthest Drive Home @ Porter Butt: Bath
2nd August- with Hides In Caves, Rig Up Explosive etc@ The Standard: London
3rd august- with Jon Kennedy @ Star and Dove: Bristol
4th august- closed caption (bands tbc) @ The Racehorse, Northampton
5th august- The Ruined @ The Shed, Leicester

We are hoping to stay on the road until the 7th, so if anyone has anything available on either Monday 6th or Tuesday 7th August please get in touch!

At the end of the tour some of the artwork is going to be auctioned with a majority of the money being donated to charity. The whole thing is hopefully all being filmed so we'll have something to show those of you who can't make it...

I've booked a rail to exhibit at 'Red Mutha Dirty Fashion Weekend' in Brighton on the 16th and 17th June. It's at the Fabrica Gallery which is bang in the city centre. It's open to the public to come along and shop, and there's a bar open on the Saturday too. Bonus.

Graf artists wanted for live painting: southampton

Now things are going to be starting to lighten and brigthen up on the weather front, we're extending the Visual Tourettes nights to have live painting in the beer garden.
With t-shirts, bar tabs and more to be confirmed as prizes, the set up is a 3 on 3 crew battle with the winners being judged by the crowd.
The first night to have this is the next event on the 30th March, and the teams have already been confirmed.
